Niknight Fiction (“we,” “our,” “us”) uses cookies and similar technologies to run this site, understand how readers use it, and keep preferences (like dark mode). This page explains what cookies are, what we use them for, how you can control them, and how this interacts with tools we use on WordPress.

1) What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They help websites remember things like your session, preferences, and interactions. We also use related technologies such as local storage and pixels. For simplicity, we call all of these “cookies.”

2) How we use cookies (at a glance)

  • Essential operation – keep the site running (security, load balancing, WordPress core, comment basics).
  • Preferences – remember choices like WP Dark Mode (light/dark), and commenter details if you choose to save them.
  • Analytics (present or future) – understand traffic and performance (e.g., Google Analytics).
  • Advertising (present or future) – serve and measure ads (e.g., Google AdSense).
  • Forms & anti-spam – run our Report or contact forms (WPForms) and protect them (e.g., reCAPTCHA if enabled).
  • Community – power comments via wpDiscuz (e.g., remembering your name/email if you opt in).

Note: CPT UI and ACF are configuration tools we use in the WordPress backend. They generally do not set frontend cookies for visitors by themselves.

3) Types of cookies we use

A. Strictly Necessary (can’t be switched off)

These make the site work and keep it secure. Examples:

  • WordPress core/session and security cookies.
  • Cookies that remember your consent choices (from our consent banner, if enabled).
  • Basic comment functionality (e.g., to submit forms securely).

B. Preferences (functional)

Used to remember your settings and choices:

  • WP Dark Mode preference (light vs. dark).
  • Commenter details (name/email/website) if you choose “save my details for next time.”

C. Analytics (performance/measurement)

Help us understand what’s working and what’s confusing:

  • Page views, approximate geography, device types, time on page, etc.
  • Typically set by providers like Google Analytics (if/when enabled).

D. Advertising (targeting/measurement)

Support the site by showing ads and measuring them:

  • Ad delivery, viewability, frequency capping, and interest categories.
  • Typically set by providers like Google AdSense (if/when enabled).
  • Where required (e.g., EEA/UK), ads won’t run until you give consent via the banner.

4) Tools we use and what they might set

We describe functions rather than exact cookie names (names can change when plugins update):

  • WordPress Core
May set essential cookies for login/session (mostly for admins) and comment basics. If you tick “Save my name/email/website” when commenting, WordPress sets preference cookies so you don’t type them again next time.
  • wpDiscuz (comments)
May set cookies/local storage to remember your commenter details, last visit time, and to improve loading and anti-spam behavior.
  • WP Dark Mode
Stores your theme preference (dark/light) so the site remembers your choice between visits.
  • WPForms (report/contact forms)
The form itself doesn’t usually set cookies, but we may use anti-spam features or Google reCAPTCHA which can set their own cookies to distinguish humans from bots.
  • Analytics (e.g., Google Analytics)
If enabled, sets first-party cookies to collect usage stats (page views, referrers, etc.). We use this to improve the site.
  • Advertising (e.g., Google AdSense)
If enabled, may set cookies for ad delivery and measurement. In some regions, consent is required before these run.
  • Donations/Payments (future: Patreon, Ko-fi, payment processors)
If we embed or link to those services, they may set cookies on their sites or in embedded widgets. Their own policies apply.

5) Managing your choices

  • Consent banner: If you see our cookie banner, you can accept all cookies or choose categories (e.g., allow Preferences but not Analytics/Ads). You can revisit your choices anytime via the banner’s “Preferences”/“Settings” link (usually in the footer).
  • Browser controls: You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings. This may affect functionality (e.g., comments not remembering your details, theme preference not saved).
  • Ad personalization: Ad networks often provide their own controls for personalized ads. If AdSense is enabled and personalization is available in your region, you’ll be able to manage it from our banner or your Google ad settings.
  • Do Not Track: Industry support for DNT is inconsistent. We honor your explicit consent choices via the banner over browser DNT signals where applicable.

6) Data retention

Cookie lifespans vary. Some expire when you close your browser (session cookies); others last longer to remember preferences or measure returning visits. Analytics and ad providers define their own durations. We do not keep cookies longer than necessary for the stated purpose.

7) Third-party cookies

Some cookies are set by third parties (analytics, ads, embedded services like reCAPTCHA). We don’t control their names or lifespans. Please review their policies for details. Where required, these cookies only run after you consent.

8) Children’s data

This site is not directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly place cookies to build profiles of children.

9) Changes to this policy

We’ll update this page when our cookie use changes (for example, if we add or remove analytics/ads, or enable new features). The Effective Date at the top will reflect the latest version.

10) Contact & jurisdiction

Quick FAQ (plain-English)

  • Will you ever charge for fan translations? No. Fan translations remain free.
  • Why do I see a dark/light theme automatically? We remember your WP Dark Mode choice so you don’t have to toggle it every visit.
  • Why do ads/analytics sometimes not load? In regions requiring consent, we wait for your choice first.
  • Can I use the site without cookies? Essential cookies keep the site working. You can block others (Preferences/Analytics/Ads), but some features may not remember your settings.
